This Date In Islanders History

December 7th, 2006 by murph

I just don’t have the time or resources to do this everyday, but reader CC just posted a momentous Islander anniversary tonight in our comments section that needs to be properly celebrated.

December 7th….On this date in 1978 Mike Bossy scored his first career Hat Trick. That’s all.

The Islanders whupped up on St. Louis that night 7-1. I emailed Mike to congratulate him, you can too at bossyblog@newyorkislanders.com

[Update 1] 100% WRONG! Thanks a lot WCBS 880 (the original “source” of the “fact”) for making us look like idiots. Reader Eric Hornick has the real scoop.

Sorry to ruin the stat- but it’s not right.

Bossy did have a hat trick on this date in 1978, but it wasn’t the first of his career.

On February 4, 1978, Bossy recorded the first hat of his career, [goals 37-38-39]against the man who would later give up his 50th and 51st career goals, Washington’s Bernie Wolfe.

It was the only hat trick of his rookie season. Bossy scored seven goals in four games vs. Washington that season.

The hat trick against St. Louis’ Ed Staniowski on 12/7/78 was his second career hat trick, and the first of five that he had that season.

You can bet the house that Islanders Army will be celebrating on February 4th though…
