Martinek Out For The Year, According to Newsday

February 20th, 2007 by Tom

Newsday’s Greg Logan reports that Radek Martinek is going to be sidelined with a fractured leg for the remainder of the season. Logan says he got the news from “a person with direct knowledge of the situation.”

It’s definitely a blow to the OrangeAndBlue but one made a bit easier to withstand with the trade for Marc-Andre Bergeron. Still, Martinek is a much better defender than Bergeron. It’ll be interesting to see if the rest of the Islanders’ defense can step up and provide the necessary protection in front of DiPietro as the tension ratchets up during the playoff push. And, there’s always the possibility of another trade, although prevailing wisdom is that the Isles will go for a forward before adding another blueliner.

Speaking of defense, where the hell was it yesterday? Actually, you can’t really blame of the defenders on either side for the results of the shootout with Pittsburgh. That was just some wide-open hockey. Great to see the Pens get beat at their own game.
