Senators Stand By As Goalie Gets Pummeled
February 23rd, 2007 by Tom
Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and the rest of the Senators on the ice for last night’s 12-man brawl should have a tough time looking in the mirror today. After Buffalo’s Chris Drury was laid off out on a controversial but legal hit, multiple players dropped gloves. Once the refs cleared everything up and dropped the puck again, Buffalo’s tough-guy line came after a line full of Ottawa skill players. The result was a bunch of Sabres looking for a fight and a bunch of Senators running from one, all except goalie Ray Emery.
Viewers got treated to the rare Goalie Versus Goalie fight when Emery and Buffalo’s Martin Biron sought each other out at center-ice. Goalie fights are really some of the most fascinating moments in sports. I love goalie fights. Everyone does. These guys have tons of pads on and can hardly move their arms. They’re like little kids in snowsuits. They usually just grab onto each other and spin.
This one went a little differently with Emery absolutely housing Biron in front of the Buffalo faithful. So Sabres tough guy Andrew Peters decides to stand up for Biron and take on Emery himself. Now, Emery may be the best fighting goalie in history, he certainly looked good last night, but there is no way he can be expected to take on a legitimate fighter. So Peters pummedled him. All the while Spezza, Heatley and the rest of the Senators just watched. Not one guy stepped in to protect his keeper.
I wonder what the Ottawa locker room was like after the game. It isn’t surprising that the Sabres went on to win in a shootout. They rallied together as a team. Some of the Ottawa guys couldn’t even look each other in the eyes. Bad job by the Sens.

While Emery fought, Spezza and his linemates did nothing.

The Sens are such pussies. First off, its the coach’s fault for not putting out his big boys. What did he expect? Lindy Ruff did it, he couldn’t changed his skill guys. Then noone standing up for Emery was ridiculous. I hate the Sens but that was disgusting. I think it was Barry Melrose that said there were ‘4 cowards on the ice watching Emery fight’. No way would that have happened here.
