DP Out Tonight, Should Be Back By Weekend

March 15th, 2007 by murph

From NewYorkIslanders.com, here’s the update on DP’s injury.

After being re-evaluated today in Montreal by medical personnel and the Islanders training staff, goaltender Rick DiPietro will be a “game-time decision” for Thursday night’s match against the Senators in Ottawa.

DiPietro is experiencing neck stiffness from a collision with Montreal’s Steve Begin late in the first period of the Islanders’ 5-3 loss on Tuesday night in Montreal.

Islanders’ beat writer Greg Logan spoke with Coach Nolan and DP. It’s expected DP will sit tonight and should be back for Saturday’s game.

Although Nolan declined to say whether or not DiPietro officially was diagnosed with a concussion, another high-ranking person in the organization said they don’t believe he has a concussion. DiPietro has some stiffness in his neck and “general soreness,” but the feeling is he’s likely to miss one game and probably will return for the final two games of this road trip at Florida and Tampa Bay. It’s even possible DiPietro might skate tomorrow morning in Ottawa, so, you never know.

    1) Great news if true. Dunham is a decent back up BUT if this team is going to advance into the playoffs they need a healthy DP on his game
    2) Still not certain that DP didn’t sustain another concussion else the team would simply say so. The secretive way in which they are keeping this leads us to believe that at the very least he suffered a mild concussion( If you see the replay it seems impossible for him to not have!) Time will tell ofcourse how much of a lasting effct this will have on him.
    3) As for tonight if Mike pulls out a win tonite in Sen country it will be HUGE! The Isles have a lot going against them: a) they never play well in Ottawa
    b) Ottawa is playing as well as they have all year c) The Isles haven’t been the same team since the trade deadline(chemistry problem) d) Their back up will be playing.
    4) These are the games that help define a team! Lets see if this group is really different that in years past when they would wilt in a contest like tonight!
