Ex-Isle Turgeon To Hang Up Skates
June 13th, 2007 by murph
Ex-Islander Pierre Turgeon is apparently ready to hang up his skates and retire after 19 seasons in the NHL.
Veteran forward Pierre Turgeon has decided to retire after 19 NHL seasons, according to a report in The Denver Post.
Sources told the newspaper that Turgeon, 37, is expected to make a formal announcement soon.
Turgeon last played with the Colorado Avalanche, signing a two-year, $3 million deal with the club in 2005 on the same day Peter Forsberg signed with the Philadelphia Flyers via free agency.
Injuries plagued Turgeon late in his career. Shoulder surgery kept him out of the lineup late in the 2005-06 season, while groin and calf injuries limited him to just 17 games last season.
In 1,294 career games with six NHL teams, he had 515 goals and 812 assists for 1,327 points. With the Sabres, Islanders, Canadiens, Blues, Stars and Avs, Turgeon never played in a Stanley Cup final.
“Turgeon never played in a Stanley Cup final”. Who’s fault is that? Dale freakin’ Hunter, that’s who. I’m still convinced the Isles beat Montreal in 1993 and go to the finals if Turgeon doesn’t get injured in the Caps series.
Best of luck Pierre, enjoy your retirement. Thanks for the memories.

1) For those who are too young to recall the Dynasty years, Turgeon may be remembered as the best player they’ve seen on the team. His tenure was the last team to win a playoff series. A dizzying 14 years ago!!
2) The deal that sent him packing in 1994 was one of the many dark spots in isles history. No one knew it at the time, but it was just a step of MANY to come that would plummet the once proud franchise into their dark ages of the mid/late 1990s
