Isles Sign Comrie
July 5th, 2007 by murph
Woah! Slow down Garth, I can’t keep up. The Islanders have announced the signing of Mike Comrie fomerly with the Ottawa Senators, to a one year deal for $3.375 million.
On the heels of adding four-time NHL Star-Bill Guerin, the Islanders have signed center MIKE COMRIE to a one-year contract. The 26-year old Comrie had 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in 65 games last season with Phoenix and Ottawa. In the Senators’ run to the Stanley Cup Final in June, the Edmonton native had four goals and two assists in 20 games.

My apologies for doubting Garth and Co. Kudos to the signings of the last 24 hours!!!!!!!!
I want to make this apology public because of the scathing post I wrote on one of these message boards…..I dont know how far our team will go this year….but I think it will be fun to watch…..because I believe that you (Garth and Ted) in fact do have a plan and are not nearly finished with it.
Again I will be there to support you and this team and I call on all other fans to do the same….LETS ROCK THE BARN THIS YEAR AND SUPPORT OUR TEAM LIKE NEVER BEFORE!!!!!!!
My new screen name will be season ticket holder!!!!!!
Thank You for keeping us in this!!!!!!!!

1) Not to be Johnny rain cloud here, but Guerin, while a good scoring wing, is now 36, and can hardly be expected to be a long term fixture on LI. We guess if Satan can get 4.5 mil next season, giving Guerin the same dough can’t be a bad deal.
2) That seems to be the problem with the Isles. Each of the last 3 summers the team has thrown together a bunch of the second tier UFA’s and other cast offs. Some/many have worked enough to keep the team in the playoff hunt BUT the team lacks depth and has few blue chip prospects.
3) Therefore although Nolan may motivate the team to over achieve again this year to an 8th spot that’s a LONG way from being an actual Cup contender. Its 14 years and counting since the last Isles playoff series win. An astounding stat that sadly is not in danger of being changed even with these signings.

Guerin is a stopgap, and the inteligent folks here know this. He is not a long-term solution.
Comrie, on the otherhand, should’ve been signed for longer time. He’s young enough to fit into the Islanders long-term plans.

I am happy with the signings. We all know Guerin isn’t going to play more than a few years, but he’s still one of the better forwards in the league. If Comrie proves to be a stud, I hope we can extefd his contract before he gets away. We’ve got to start somewhere AND be competitive. With a few more players like these we might have a better year than last season.
I am optimistic that Garth & Ted are moving things in the right direction. Still, it makes me wonder how much better things may have gone had we found a way to get Smyth’s name on a contract.

Good signings. Guerin’s may be a bit pricey, but we’ll see how he produces. Comrie brings speed, skill, and under-sized grit. Love him. He’ll be better for this team than Blake was. Now, the big question has to be – are they going after Souray? If they can bring him in, it would be huge. With Souray, Guerin, Comrie, and sprinkle in some youth, I think they would have a better team than they started with last year.
