New Islanders Jerseys Officially Revealed

Late last night Newsday posted the scoop and first photo of the Islanders’ new jersey being modeled by goalie Rick DiPietro. The Islanders updated their website this morning with the other photo featuring both the home and away jerseys.

I’m not crazy about them. I like the player number on the front (ala the Sabres) and the thin stripes at the bottom. Even though I like it, the player number on the front is getting a little played out already - it was cool and unique when the Sabres did it last year, now there are 4 NHL teams using that style. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ref’s jerseys started using it too. Back to the Isles, there’s too much orange on the sleeves - especially on the away (white) jersey. The jersey is nice and clean and white with our classic logo…and then you’ve got these big bright orange sleeves. They stand out too much.

The Isles are hoping you’ll like them though, and are ready to take your pre-order ASAP. I’ll give the team a little credit for selling the new jerseys at a nice discount price (they probably all come with Yashin’s #79).

How to get one? Jerseys can be pre-ordered today through the Islanders (go to newyorkislanders.com) and will retail for $135. Season-ticket holders will receive a letter in the mail tomorrow offering the jerseys at the deep discount price of $75 and they will go on sale at the Islanders Team Store at the Broadway Mall in Hicksville starting Sept. 15.

The best quote in the Newsday article comes from Reebok’s talking head.

“The League sat down and brainstormed about what would be the biggest improvement for the game and the uniform was first and foremost,” said Keith Leach, director of NHL Uniforms for Reebok, the company responsible for the overhaul.

What? Excuse me? Someone needs to pull a jersey over this guy’s head (I don’t care if it’s the old or the new jersey) and pummel him. I mean, he works for Reebok, so what can you really expect him to say, but still “the uniform was first and foremost”? Ha! Maybe in Reebok’s accounting department, but not on the ice. Somehow I don’t see new jerseys fixing scoring, clutching and grabbing, stick fouls, hits to the head, or overtime anytime soon.

Regardless, we’re stuck with these new jerseys for a least a couple of years until someone steps up and throws more money at the NHL then Reebok did. Then we’ll get some new-new jerseys.

when i first saw them, i wasn’t pleased; they are way too busy……..i’m sure i’ll get used to them in time (especially the home jersey, since the away ones have terrible sleeves), but i will never accept the number on the front, it just looks misplaced

Why is there a zero “0″ before the single digit numbers? Is this joke going to be on the sleeves as well? Agree, get rid of the orange on the biceps and the piping as well. The horizontal strip across the bottom is so narrow it isn’t even visible so what’s the point? THe tie would be fine as a “retro” touch, but it looks dumb with the NHL logo tied up behind it. Just too much stuff.

Not happy about the new jerseys at all. Clowns, pajamas, little boys, and embarrassing are the words that come to my mind.
I am a die-hard Isles fan, but deep down, we all know this ain’t right.
Hope for a revert back to the classic look in a year or so.

Ugh. They look awful — way too much orange. And way too ‘ghetto fabulous.’

Now the Rangers are really going to have to kick some booty.

i gotta admit a was a little dissapointed when i first saw the new jerseys. but i gotta admit (and i cant be the only person)…they really start to grow on you. i think if you really look at them long enough, the orange on the sleeves dont seem to be too much of a problem and if you toss on a blue helmet, gloves, and shorts…it wont be so bad. i think they look pretty awesome now and im glad with how they turned out…and as many have said before…it could definately have been worse.
    LETS GO ISLANDERS!

Somebody’s asleep at the wheel on this site. Andy Sutton and Josef Vasicek were both signed, and the top 2 stories here right now are the new jerseys and the Devils sigining Asham?

Yes, they are awful. I’m embarrassed for our Isles having to wear them. Laces suck, get them off the modern hockey jersey already. They serve no purpose. The piping around the shoulder is just dumb. We’re not the ones with it either if you look at some of the other teams offerings. And way too much orange. I was hoping we’d do something smart (of course we don’t…) and replicate our classic look on the new Reebok system like Detroit did, but of course we get these instead. They look like pajamas. Not impressed.

    1) Definitly NOT in the same class as the Stan Fischler on the front jersey’s of 10 years ago, but they are NOT a huge amount better.
    2) Why did they feel they needed to change them in the first place?? Go back to the original the team wore and won in 25+ years ago! Leave off the silly 4 stripes! Its as much of a reminder of the current long drought of wining as it is of past glory. It also loooks goofy

    @Jeff

Oh snap! The readers are calling us out.

Well actually Jeff you have a point, we have definitely been slacking. Tommy’s been MIA all summer and I’ve been running the show solo. Real life has been a little crazy, and I’m in the process of getting 2 Fantasy Football websites launched this week. All that plus the general lack of Islanders news equals updates few and far between.

We appreciate your concern and promise things will ramp up nicely once training camp gets underway.

    Let’s Go Islanders!
    F the Rangers!

I would have liked the new jerseys if the biceps weren’t orange.

GUH-AY. I guess we should be happy that they don’t feature any fishermen on them. I hope these are “third jerseys” or whatever the marketing gurus are calling them now….

I would actually prefer the fisherman to this.

Why is it that other teams…like the Canadiens and Red Wings…didn’t revamp their sweaters to look like Arena Football jerseys? Why is it that the Islanders continue to try and rework or modify a jersey that contains ALL OF THE HISTORY THAT THIS FRANCHISE HAS??? God knows, it doesn’t appear that they are going to be creating a new “dynasty” any time soon, so what could they be thinking?

Adding the four stripes was a good idea. Darker blue…well OK. But this is friggin ridiculous!
