Fastest Three Goals in Islanders History

September 13th, 2007 by murph

Found a new Islanders video on YouTube.com today. This is from Islanders at Rangers, October 23, 1983. The Isles are trailing 5-2 with less than 5 minutes left in the game. Denis Potvin scores at 15:15 to make it 5-3. Bryan Trottier scores about 12 seconds later and then Bob Bourne about 18 seconds after that. 3 goals, 30 seconds, tie game.

Unfortunately, it appears the Islanders go on to lose the game 6-5 to the Rangers. I’m not 100% sure about the “fastest 3 goals in history” claim, so if anyone can prove/disprove, please let me know.

It was three goals in 27 seconds, and it was quite definitely the fastest three goals in Islanders history. I remember it well - I was a college student in Baltimore, standing on the corner outside my apartment so that I could pick up the strong signal of what was then WNEW 1130 (the same frequency that now carries the Islanders) carrying the Rangers with Marv Albert and Sal Messina - one of the few Islanders games I was able to listen to that season. The Islanders scored those three to tie it, then lost in overtime - and it happened to be the first regular-season overtime loss in Islanders history. That was the season that the NHL started overtime, and the Islanders had a win in Washington in their only previous OT game that year.

I did a search on the internet and found the following:

FASTEST THREE GOALS IN A SINGLE GAME: BILL MOSIENKO, 21 SECONDS

Mosienko’s third period hat trick on March 23, 1952–the final game of the season–propelled the Blackhawks to a 7-6 victory over the Rangers. The 30-year-old right winger shattered the old record by 43 seconds. In fact, no team, much less an individual, had notched a hat trick that quickly. New York goalie Lorne Anderson, who was on the wrong side of destiny that night, never played in the NHL again.

The NHL record for three goals by one team was set by the Bruins in 1972. The middle of the three was scored by Ed Westfall.
