NY Times Asks if Tavares is The Next Great One

November 29th, 2007 by Tom

Great article in the NY Times today on 17-year-old phenom John Tavares. It’s actually on the front page of the Times’ sports secion! A genuine hockey story! What will they think of next?

It’s a good read about a kid with amazing ability who is starting to feel the weight of the entire Canadian nation to be Gretzky’s successor as The Next Great One. Garth should start thinking about ways to land this dude. If you can, check out the hard copy of the paper for a 32-year-old photo of a goofy Wayne Gretzky that for some reason did not make the cut for the online edition.

One other observation. The Times seems to write off Sid the Kid as not being The Next Great One. I don’t know, man. Sidney has been pretty damn impressive and he does have the Gretzky whine down. I think the jury is still out on him. Fun to see the list of guys who were considered candidates - Alexandre Daigle included.
