Have You Seen This Man?

The primary reason for this post is to let Murph know I’m still alive. Last I heard, he had put together a crack team of investigatros to comb every bar in the Tri-State area with Helmet, Fugazi, and Johnny Cash on the jukebox and Molson Canadien on tap (probably about a half dozen but who’s counting). Normally, that kind of strategy would yield results in about three hours but unfortunately, I haven’t been in the Tri-State area. Instead I’ve been spending my time in Florida, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Baltimore for work.
I don’t mind traveling, especially when I get some relief from the Northeast winter, even when it has been as uncharacteristally mild as it has been. But I do mind missing my Islanders, and that’s exactly what has been happening. I’ve seen portions of just three games in the past four weeks - the 5-3 loss to the Flyers on Jan. 19, the 4-3 win over the Flyers on the 12th (when I convinced my wife and her folks, who live in Florida during the winter, to meet me for dinner at a sports bar. They enjoyed the sandwiches and the framed Miami Heat jerseys, I enjoyed the Islanders snapping that long-assed losing streak), and the 3-2 victory today over the Sharks. At this rate I’m at risk of becoming a “casual fan.” I need a steady dose of Isles hockey to regain my rightful status as a bigtime fan (I’ll leave the hardcore designation to the men and women who attend every home game).
A couple of more weeks in Florida and I promise I’ll be back strong, ready to watch Chris Campoli dominate the blue line again. Just kidding. Even I know he’s out. I think. So sad.

Papi Says
I hear you brother! My pop came from Ecuador in 1972. Bought his first Islander jersey in 1979 and I’m still rocking my Bossy jersey in the streets of NYC and Paris. Indeed, hard to get to games these days, but still have to get tix for the playoffs. Oh, indeed–we’ll make playoffs.
Stay well all.
Papi from New York City.
