DP Misses Rangers Comeback Victory

December 30th, 2008 by Tom

So much for getting the Rangers at the right place and the right time. The Blueshirts buzzed the Isles with four third period goals and skated away with a 5-4 victory. The Isles fought hard for a while but were on their heels the entire third period.

The $67 Million Dollar Man sat out yet another game. Coach Scott Gordon scratched DiPietro a few hours before the game to give his keeper more time to get over his groin injury. Gordon said he didn’t know when DP would be back in the line-up.

“With a strain, you’re pushing the envelope where you can get through a practice or get through a game, but then if you hurt it, you’re worse off than when you started,” Gordon told Newsday. “So it’s not like there’s a definite timetable.”

DiPietro has played 10 periods this season. The Islanders have one win in December. They’re dead last in the league in points. Is there a silver lining somewhere with this team? Anywhere? I don’t see it.

The silver lining for the Isles is always the draft these days. Vive the future.

While Trent Hunter couldn’t after getting the wind knocked out of him, Islander fans can all breathe a sigh of relief that he wasn’t hurt worse than he was. Every team needs at least one Trent Hunter. He’s a throwback to Tonelli and Nystrom.

But, geez, what is it with this team? Already shy on talent and depth, the lineup loses way more man-games to injury than average most seasons.

I respect the job that Ted Nolan did and Scott Gordon does to get the team so ready to play and to try so hard even as the losses mount — but enough already with all the injuries.

I agree about the silver lining, most teams needs to get worst before they get better (Penguins are the best example). The problem with the Islanders for the last while is they were always somewhere in the middle, they didn’t have much but somehow always competed. To be honest it would be much better for them long term to finish as they are now in dead last then to make a fighting comeback only to miss the playoffs by a few points like they always seem to.
