Time For DiPietro to Renegotiate?

January 29th, 2009 by Tom

The Wings signed Star forward Henrik Zetterberg to a 12-year, $73 million deal this week. Wow. That’s an average of more than $6 million a year. We like Zetterberg and think he’s a great player but 12 years for a 28-year-old is kind of risky, don’t you think? The Red WIngs were smart to frontload the contract, meaning Zetterberg will get more money in the first half of the deal than the latter half when he’s likely to be less productive. For example, he’s due to receive just a $1 million in each of the final two years of the pact.

Because we’re Islanders fans, long-term contracts always catch our eye. Rick DiPietro’s $67 million, 15-year-deal could lool like a bargain next to Zetterberg’s. DP is in the third year of his deal and is just 27-years-old. Plus, his deal averages to about $4.5 million a season. Some might call that a bargain.

We’re sort of just messing around with this post. At this point in their careers, you can’t compare the two players at all. Zetterberg is a multiple Stanley Cup champion and was the Conn Smythe winner last season when he set a franchise record with 27 postseason points. The guy has been to the mountaintop and played big.

You know we like DP enough but the jury is still out on him.

Obviously we need to invest in a good back up. Can our defense be upgraded?

    1) We find it amusing how these LONG deals are now fine and dandy, but when Wang/the Isles do them they are insane! LOL
    2) The deal in Detroit makes sense for them. Like the deal in NY made sense for the isles. We wouldn’t have done either(or any contract greater than 5 years) but that’s just our opinion.
    3) There are ways of getting out of long term deals, and no one knows what the future CBA (after 2011) will look like. Also IF Dipietro’s numerous injuries become chronic and he’s forced to retire early the team both won’t have the salary on their cap, and some will be paid by insurance.

Is it time for DiPietro to renegotiate or is it time for the Isles to open the contract and lop off a decade?

Just kidding, of course. Renegotiating contracts is a one-way street.

DP was a good goalie (and will hopefully be again) with potential for excellence, but why oh why did Mad Mike ever trade Luongo except for the ego masturbation of being the first GM to draft a goalie first overall?

I’m sorry to rip off that huge scab. I know I shouldn’t live in the past, but I’m an Islander fan, dammit.

As long as the NYIs keep making questionable (dubious? doubtful? idiotic?) decisions regarding their goaltending, I’m forced to live in the present, too.

Actually, Zetterberg has only won 1 Stanley Cup, he joined the Red Wings in 2002-03 season, the year after the Wings won the cup that year.
