Parrish Debuts in Dallas with Hat-Trick

November 8th, 2008 by murph

Ex-Isle Mark Parrish was signed to Bridgeport a couple of weeks ago on a 25-game tryout basis. Being an AHL-only contract, he was free to sign with any NHL team and was picked up by the Dallas Stars earlier this week. Last night he made his Dallas debut netting a hat-trick in the Stars 5-2 win.

Mark Parrish had his sixth career hat trick in his Dallas debut and the Stars beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-2 on Friday night.

Parrish, who signed a one-year deal with Dallas on Wednesday, had two power-play goals and a breakaway tally in the first 26 minutes of play.

Postgame Quotes - Isles Fall to Stars in OT

November 27th, 2007 by Tom

Here’s what some of the players and coaches had to say following last night’s 3-2 Islander loss in OT at the hands of the Dallas Stars. Isles did a great job making sure they left the Coliseum with a point after it looked like the Stars would get the regulation victory.

“I don’t sense any frustration on the team yet,” Miro Satan told Newsday. “Our record is fine, and there’s enough experience and grit on this team to go through that.”

“The puck goes to one of the most skilled guys in the history of the game,” Coach Ted Nolan said to Newsday regarding Mike Modano’s game-winner. “It’s just one of those things.”

“It was one of those games where maybe we shouldn’t have gotten a point, but we found a way,” Nolan said.

“The thing you love about (Modano) is he’s getting into the battles,” Stars Coach Dave Tippett told the Dallas Morning News. “The winning goal is one in which he beat somebody to get to the space. It was a hard goal. Mo can be a real factor in games when he plays like that.”

“We took the responsibility for everyone to come ready to play in any situation they are put it in,” Modano told the Dallas newspaper. “The positive is we’re winning games, and everybody feels like they’re contributing and playing well collectively.”

“Normally I would just take him out, but I thought I still had a chance,” Stars goalie Marty Turco said to the Associated Press regarding Richard Park and his shorthanded goal. “You win some, you lose some.”

“We fought all game and did a pretty good job staying with our game plan,” Islanders forward Mike Comrie told the AP. “We got a good power-play goal at the end, but it’s disappointing when you give up that point.”

Update 5 - Isles Fall in Overtime

November 26th, 2007 by Tom

Richard Park’s shorthanded goal in the second period has put the Islanders up 1-0 over the Dallas Stars tonight. The game just reached the midpoint of the second period.
Park scored when Sergei Zubov pinched on a power play and the puck was cleared to the Stars’ blueline. Park easily beat all skaters to the puck, including keeper Marty Turco, and put a backhand right into the open net. It was Park’s eigth career shorthanded goal.
Moments later, Park was the first to a loose puck again. This time Turco got the better of Park, clamping down on a slap shot towards the top right corner.

It’s the first time Dallas has visited the Island in four years, according to Howie Rose. Normally, the Stars are scheduled to visit the Coliseum once every three years. The extra year is due to that little strike they had a few years back.

We’ll keep you posted as the game continues.

***
Mike Modano just beat DiPietro to tie the score at 1 with about seven minutes to go in the second. That guy just keeps on producing.

***
With 15:30 left in the game, Chris Simon redirects a pass right at the crease and raises his arms in celebration. Comrie follows suit. No red light. No siren. Refs review the play and it turns out Turco made a heck of a save, trapping the puck between his legs. Two minutes later, a Zubov cross in the Isles’ zone deflects off of Sillinger right to Jeff Halpern at the side of the net. Halpern beats DP for the go-ahead goal.

***
With about three minutes left, the Isles go on the power play. They were unsuccessful on three previous man-advantage situations. Berard fires a shot from the point. The puck is blocked and goes to Bergeron at the blueline. Bergeron fires. Turco makes the save. Satan is there to put in the rebound! Tie Game! That goal was typical Islander power play scoring. Work hard and gain the advantage in position and get the shot off. Rarely pretty, often effective. 2-2. I wonder how hard Dallas will play the rest of the way. They might just want to get out of town with the one point for the regulation tie.

***
We’re in overtime. Each team is assured of one point. I expect the Islanders to be very aggressive here.

***
Well that was fast. The Stars took control right from the OT faceoff. Modano crashes the net for a rebound and puts it right past DiPietro for his second goal of the night. Dallas escapes New York with back-to-back 3-2 wins and six straight victories overall. The win also snaps the Islanders’ six game win streak against the Stars.

It was a pretty evenly played game. Stars were just more active in the brief (very, very brief) overtime. They get the win. Still, nice job by the Islanders skating with the Stars all night and fighting back for the tie when it looked like a regulation loss was in the cards.

Next up, Ottawa on Wednesday.

Islanders - Stars Preview

November 26th, 2007 by Tom

Sorry for the lack of posting lately, IslandersArmy has been busy with work, visiting relatives, holidays, drinking a few pints, and a big win for Tom’s Team over Murph’s in the 17th Annual Turkey Bowl Football Game. It was the first time in the 17 years we have been playing this game that Murph and I went head-to-head. One of the highlights had to be Murph stopping to cheer for me after I made a catch before realizing that we were no longer on the same team. I bet you Ryan Smyth gets that a lot when he plays against Edmonton, too.

So while I was offline, the Coliseum Heroes split a home-and-home with the Bruins, which is acceptable, and are now gearing up to face the first-place Dallas Stars. The red hot Stars, winners of five straight, are coming off an impressive win over the Rangers at MSG yesterday. Stars’ goaltender Mike Smith tallied 39 saves in the contest. Hell of a job.

No word yet on whether Smith or veteran Marty Turco will be in between the pipes for tonight’s game on Hempstead Turnpike. While Turco has been good, posting a 2.64 GAA and a .905 save percentage, Smith has been better. The second-year keeper has a 2.19 GAA and a .916 save percentage and is undefeated with a 1.00 GAA in his last three games.

I’m really interested to see how Bill Guerin performs against his former team. Guerin, who is still collecting a paycheck from the Stars, played for Dallas 2002 through 2006 and posted a career-best 69 points for the team in the 2003-04 season.

Also of interest is whether the Isles can keep up their recent domination of Dallas. The Isles have won the last six contests between the teams. I never would have guessed that. I distinctly remember DiPietro’s shutout last year (I think we did a live blog) but I couldn’t tell you anything about the five other games without looking them up. I guess that’s what happens in the current NHL where Eastern teams and Western teams have just a handful of games against each other.

The Islanders are going to need to find a way to spark the offense tonight and going forward. The OrangeAndBlue have scored just 11 times in the past seven games. Not surprisingly, the Isles won just three of those games.

Happy belated Thanksgiving. Hope you got fat and tired.
