See, what would be best here is if a giant hole opened up on the ice and no one ever heard from these two clowns again. Our least favorite Maple Leaf and Ranger, Darcy Tucker and Sean Avery, went at it last night. Actually, they almost went at it before the game when Mr. Oh-So-Classy Avery whacked Blake’s shinguards…in warmups. I saw this replay while out last night and was very confused as to who to root for.

Islanders legend Bobby Nystrom’s son Eric is now playing for the Calgary Flames. Like his old man, he’s not afraid to drop the gloves when necessary. Here’s his first NHL fight - nothing special, they exchange right hands and then Nystrom falls on top of Kurtis Foster of the Wild.

No. Freaking. Way. Video of Alexei Yashin getting into it with Anton Belov in the Russian league. Our favorite turtleneck wearing Russian ends up on the bottom and the refs move in to quickly break it up. Thanks to FauxRumors for the pointer.
[Update] Something is up with either the blog or YouTube. None of the YouTube embeds are working anymore. I’ll have to look into this tonight. Here is the link to the Yashin clip.
In a short but fun video where the nicknames were better than the actual fight, Battlin’ Billy Smith takes on Lanny “Moustache” McDonald.

Who doesn’t love goalie fights? More later on the pre-season mayhem at the Coliseum last night.

Just because the Islanders have been eliminated from the playoffs doesn’t mean we here at IslandersArmy can’t bring up a pleasant memory. For part four in our Back In The Day series, we go back to April 18, 1980, courtesy of the Toronto Globe And Mail. Check out who got thrown in the box for the Bruins at the end of the first period.
Slugfest ends in overtime Islanders triumph in Battle of Boston

Bob Bourne scored an unassisted goal 1:24 into overtime, lifting New York Islanders to a 5-4 victory over the Bruins that gave them a 2-0 lead in their National Hockey League quarter-finals playoff series last night in a game at Boston marred by on-ice violence.
The Bruins tried to clear the puck out of their own zone, but Bourne stopped it at the blueline and put his fourth goal of the playoffs past Boston goalie Gerry Cheevers.
A total of 254 minutes of penalties were handed out, 128 to the Islanders. That figure set records for penalty minutes by both teams and one team in a Stanley Cup game.
Eight fights erupted in the first period. The tone was set when Clarke Gillies, who scored in overtime to win Wednesday’s first game for the Islanders, and Terry O’Reilly squared off at 2:46.
They battled again seven seconds before the end of the period, and at the end of the period four separate fights broke out as both teams milled anxiously on the ice.
That brawl resulted in the ejection of Duane Sutter, Bob Lorimer, Gord Lane and Garry Howatt, all of New York, and Mike Milbury, Wayne Cashman, Al Secord and Stan Jonathan, all of Boston.
In that period, a total of 248 minutes in penalties were called, 124 against each team, surpassing previous Stanley Cup marks for penalty minutes in a single period by both team and by one team.
Bryan Trottier gave New York a 1-0 lead at 16:08 of the first period with his fourth playoff goal. He converted a rebound on a shot by Ken Morrow. Rick Smith tied the game at 1:32 of the second period on a 15-foot shot from the left faceoff circle.

The polls are OPEN over at HockeyFights.com for their annual awards. Make sure you have 30 minutes or more of free time when you head over there. They have videos of most of the nominees so you’ll be busy watching fight videos for a little while. Just another reason why HockeyFights.com is one of my favorite websites. They had quite a year this season over there with an awesome new website redesign and a bunch of high profile mentions on Versus, Comcast Sports, The Hockey News, and more.

New on YouTube this week are a pair of Ken Baumgartner and Tie Domi scraps. The first is so-so, Bomber grabs Domi, throws a couple of punches, they fall to the ice and it turns into a wrestling match. The second tilt is a good one as the boys stay on their feet and let the fists fly.

Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and the rest of the Senators on the ice for last night’s 12-man brawl should have a tough time looking in the mirror today. After Buffalo’s Chris Drury was laid off out on a controversial but legal hit, multiple players dropped gloves. Once the refs cleared everything up and dropped the puck again, Buffalo’s tough-guy line came after a line full of Ottawa skill players. The result was a bunch of Sabres looking for a fight and a bunch of Senators running from one, all except goalie Ray Emery.
Viewers got treated to the rare Goalie Versus Goalie fight when Emery and Buffalo’s Martin Biron sought each other out at center-ice. Goalie fights are really some of the most fascinating moments in sports. I love goalie fights. Everyone does. These guys have tons of pads on and can hardly move their arms. They’re like little kids in snowsuits. They usually just grab onto each other and spin.
This one went a little differently with Emery absolutely housing Biron in front of the Buffalo faithful. So Sabres tough guy Andrew Peters decides to stand up for Biron and take on Emery himself. Now, Emery may be the best fighting goalie in history, he certainly looked good last night, but there is no way he can be expected to take on a legitimate fighter. So Peters pummedled him. All the while Spezza, Heatley and the rest of the Senators just watched. Not one guy stepped in to protect his keeper.
I wonder what the Ottawa locker room was like after the game. It isn’t surprising that the Sabres went on to win in a shootout. They rallied together as a team. Some of the Ottawa guys couldn’t even look each other in the eyes. Bad job by the Sens.

While Emery fought, Spezza and his linemates did nothing.
Awesome new fight video popped up on YouTube last week. Classic Islanders/Flyers benching brawl. Hart, Howatt, Gillies (leaves the Penalty Box to join the fracas, that’s like a 10 game suspension nowadays!), Hart, even Billy Smith mixes it up.
