The Islanders announced that Mike Sillinger will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his hip for the second time in the last year. The veteran center and assistant captain played in just seven games this season after playing in just 52 last season.
I’m pretty sure this is the final year of Sillinger’s contract. If that’s the case, we’ve probably seen the last of the 37-year-old in an Islanders uniform. He’s been a nice player for the Isles since signing as a free agent before the 2006-07 season, scoring 42 goals and 87 points in 141 games.
Neither DP or first round draft pick Josh Bailey have played yet. Martinek is out 4-6 weeks. Campoli, Sutton…we’re a week into the season and the Isles have picked up right where they left off at the end of 2007-08, battered and bruised with injuries.
That includes the team’s third round draft pick Kirill Petrov who is out 2-3 months with an undisclosed injury.
Russianprospects.com has been back to Arena Magnitogorsk to have a look at the Metallurg Magnitogorsk challenge aired for the eight turn of the 2008/09 Continental Hockey League. Ak Bars will be without Kirill Petrov (New York Islanders) as the perspective forward is reported out with a two and half – three months injury, could even miss the WJC.
With all the coverage of the Russian KHL league the past few days due to the untimely death of Rangers’ prospect Alexei Cherepanov, I wanted to check in on Petrov and see his stats…only to find the Islanders injury bug apparently has a passport.
The bad news just keeps flowing around here like the cheap beer in Pittsburgh. Saturday night at the home opener Radek Martinek got hit and stayed down in the first period. It was at the opposite end of the ice from where I was sitting. It looked like he got sandwiched by two Blues players, or he was expecting the hit to come from one side and got popped from the other. Either way, he went down, left the ice and didn’t return. The Isles haven’t said a word about him since, until this afternoon.
New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek will be out four to six weeks because of an unidentified upper-body injury suffered during a game last weekend, the club said Tuesday.
Martinek was knocked out of the Islanders’ home opener in the first period Saturday night after he absorbed a hard hit behind the net. He was evaluated by doctors that night and didn’t play in New York’s 7-1 loss to Buffalo on Monday.
The Islanders revealed the length of time Martinek is expected to miss, but still declined to provide any information about the injury.
P.S. This NHL injury disclosure policy is a J-O-K-E! JOKE! JOKE! JOKE!
Hey all – I was surfing the net at lunch and came across this story on Deadspin. Clint Malarchuck, the former Sabre goalie who left us with one of the most gruesome sports injuries ever when he had his throat slashed by a skate blade, shot himself in the face.
Apparently he’s fine. He even reportedly resisted the efforts of paramedics who wanted to treat injuries to his mouth and chin.
I have this one ankle that I sprain playing ball every once in a while and it annoys the hell out of me. Now, well, let’s just say I have some perspective.
According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Sidney Crosby returns to action for the Penguins tonight.
A few shifts. Maybe not even that.
In Sidney Crosby’s mind, he and right winger Marian Hossa won’t have any trouble clicking as linemates now that they will finally get a chance to try.
“I don’t see it being too much time at all,” Crosby said yesterday after announcing that he will return to the lineup tonight when the Penguins play the New York Islanders at Mellon Arena.
He has missed the past seven games and 28 of the past 31 because of a high ankle sprain.
As the Islanders try to play spoiler vs the first place Penguins, without Mike Comrie who will miss at least one game.
From what I gathered, Mike Comrie does have an injury to the hip and will indeed miss the game tomorrow – what happens after that depends on how fast whatever the injury is heals.
Not much to say here, we knew he wasn’t 100% since the All-Star Game, the season is all but over, and yesterday’s MRI confirmed the need for surgery.
For the second time in two seasons, Islanders franchise goaltender Rick DiPietro will have season-ending hip surgery. The operation will take place Wednesday at Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., an NHL source said, and DiPietro is expected to recover in time for training camp in September.
Dr. Marc Philippon, who performed surgery on DiPietro’s left hip last spring, will operate on his right hip this time.
Get well Ricky, see you in September for camp. Should we sign Dr. Philippon to a 15-year deal too?
James Mirtle has tallied the official NHL injury reports to determine the number of games lost to injuries this season for each team. It shouldn’t be much a surprise (Sim, Sillinger, Bates, Witt, Satan, Campoli, etc…) that the Islanders are currently in 4th place, right behind the Bruins. The Bruins however are the only possible playoff team near the top of this list.
Rk Teams Games Lost NHL pos.
1 Florida 362 22
2 Chicago 330 24
3 Boston 305 14
4 N.Y. Islanders 302 26

When it rains, it pours. More bad injury news from Islanders Country.
If nine NHL-caliber defenseman seemed like a crowd when the Islanders broke training camp, it’s turned out to be just enough now. Defenseman Brendan Witt has been ruled out for the next two to four weeks with the sprained medial collateral knee ligament he suffered Tuesday night against Philadelphia.
Fresh from my inbox and NewYorkIslanders.com, Chris Campoli is having shoulder surgery later this week and is done for the season.
Chris Campoli, one of the Islanders’ top young defensemen, will have shoulder surgery on Thursday and will be out for the remainder of the 2007-08 season
Defenseman Chris Campoli will have shoulder surgery on Thursday and will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2007-08 NHL season.

The official word on Brendan Witt and his sprained right ankle still remains day to day. Ted Nolan said this morning that the team’s solid defenseman has made considerable progress for someone who barely could move a few days ago. Nolan gave a cryptic “we’ll see him sooner rather than later” in projecting his return. Radek Martinek still probably is “at least a week” away from returning, the coach added.
