Isles’ Postseason Hardware

April 4th, 2008 by Tom

Since the season ends today, we figured why wait on handing out the hardware. So, without further ado, some of my thoughts on who did right by us Isles fans this season, with a top choice and a runner-up. I also refrained from picking any one player for two different awards. I love making up rules for myself. Murph, let us know what you think, too:

MVP - 1) Rick DiPietro 2) Brendan Witt

Ricky was the obvious choice here. On a team with very little firepower and a no-name defense, DiPietro stood on his head a ton of times to keep the Isles in the thick of things before going down with the injury. His play and Ted Nolan’s coaching were the primary reason the Isles had a shot at the playoffs for most of the season. For that reason, I almost picked Nolan as the runner-up but then I thought it was lame to pick a coach. Brendan Witt personified the team’s toughness and did a very good job manning the backline until, he too, went down with an injury (I sense a pattern here). Honorable mention goes to Mike Sillinger, Bill Guerin, Mike Comrie, and Trent Hunter.

Hardest Worker, aka the Jason Blake Memorial Trophy - 1) Trent Hunter 2) Bill Guerin

Both of these guys leave everything on the ice every night. I know a lot of Islander fans are disappointed in Hunter’s lack of points (just 12 goals this year and 40 points), but the guy is one of the few Isles playing physical from end to end, each and every game. He’s also the type of player who would be lighting the lamp much more regularly if the Isles were fortunate to have a true sniper on the team. Guerin is exactly what we thought he’d be. The guy works hard. He’s a little older now and maybe a little slower but it’s hard to gauge when there is just so little offensive talent around him.

The Wow He’s Actually Pretty Good Award - 1) Richard Park 2) Dubie

Richard Park! I can’t tell you how many times I caught myself getting excited at something Park had accomplished and then saying to myself, “Hey, that Richard Park is pretty o.k.” Maybe not the most ringing endorsement in the world but in all honestly it can take some time to win me over and Park is slowly doing that. The guy made a host of big plays this season and was fairly consistent. He currently ranks seventh on the team in points and leads the Isles with three shorthanded goals. Maybe that’s what won me over right there. Love those shorthanded goals. Back-up goalie Wade Dubielewicz was more than solid spot-starting for DiPietro for much of the season before DP went down with the injury. Since then he’s gotten even more time between the pipes and he continues to keep the Isles in games. He’s shown that last season’s heroics wasn’t a fluke and proven he can play at this level.

The Dumbest Play of The Season Award - 1) Chris Simon

The Jarkko Ruutu play. Totally unacceptable. Simon played hard but every once in a while the guy just went off the deep end. The Ruutu play got him a 30-game ban and a ticket off of the Island. Simon won the same award last year when he hit Ryan Hollweg with his stick and was suspended for 25 games.

The Invisible Man Award - 1) Shawn Bates

Another winner without a runner-up. Bates, you know we fell in love with you in 2002 but, man, where’ve you been? For the second straight season, Bates was pretty-much a no-show. He played in just two games this season. Makes last year’s 48 seem Ironman-esque.

The Why I Can’t Wait For Next Season Award - 1) Kyle Okposo 2)Blake Comeau

The Young Guns have shown some signs of things to come in their limited action this season and should give all Islander fans some hope for the future. The Isles need to get some help from the outside if they want to take the next step, but it’s nice knowing the cupboard isn’t empty.

As always, we look to our readers to let us know where we screwed up.

The Minus Gang

January 15th, 2008 by Tom

A quick look at the Isles’ player stats shows an awful lot of minusus where pluses are supposed to be. It’s somewhat understandable when the team has scored the fewest goals in the league, with just 108. But the Isles have given up just 122 goals, which ties them for 12th best in the league. So we need to take a look at the team’s goal differential of negative-14, which is 7th worst in the league. That’s where all the minuses are coming from.

Of the 27 Islanders currently on the roster, an astounding 19 have registered a minus this season. That’s exactly two-thirds of the roster. Wait, there’s more. Five Islanders have registered a 0 for plus/minus, which means they are breaking even. That means just three Islanders have a plus for the season. THREE! Or just 11.1% of the roster. That outstanding trio includes - Richard Park (+1), Sean Bergenheim (+2), and Blake Comeau (+3). Wow. That’s rough, man. By comparison, Niklas Lidstrom has the best plus/minus in the league at +34. Sort of takes some of the air out of Comeau’s +3.

Here are the most egregious offenders of The Minus Gang - Trent Hunter and Mike Comrie (both at -12), Bryan Berard (-9), and Mike Sillinger (-8). Ain’t pretty at all. In fact, just 12 players in the entire NHL have a worse plus/minus ratio than Hunter and Comrie.

For what it’s worth, nobody has been as bad in this category as Tampa’s Brad Richards and his -25. What’s crazy is that Richards has a solid 38 points (which would be good enough to lead the Isles). What the hell is happening when he isn’t scoring or assisting on goals?

Islanders Slump Continues

December 17th, 2007 by murph

So much for the fast start to the season. The Islanders continue to hover just above .500 and cannot get any momentum or excessive scoring going, dropping Saturday night’s game at the Coliseum to Pittsburgh 3-2. The Isles have not won back to back games in almost a month, dating back to mid-November and consecutive wins vs. the Rangers and Devils. Ah, the good ol’ days of mid-November.

The Isles fell behind early (bad) 2-0 partial thanks to an awful giveaway by M.A.B in his own defensive zone that led to a Sydney Crosby goal - like he needs any help scoring? The Isles came back though (good) to tie the game at 2 in the second period thanks to goals from Park and Vasicek who leads the team with 10 goals now. For illustrative purposes, Kovalchuk leads the league with 26. The Isles are 2nd to last in league scoring, the only silver lining being that the one team worse than us…is the Rangers. Back to Saturday night, later in the second period there’s some pushing and shoving between Witt and Crosby, two Pens jump in to remind Witt about their “no-touch” insurance policy on Sid. Vasicek jumps in to Witt’s defense, and after the zebras sort it out, the Pens get an early Christmas powerplay (No! Not the Pens! They never catch a break.) as Witt and Vasicek are sent to the Isles box, but only Whitney for the Pens. On the ensuing powerplay, Pittsburgh scores to make it 3-2 and that’s final goal of the game. Coach Nolan’s STILL looking for the extra penalty on that scrum.

“I still can’t understand how two guys have a little pushing match, and then two guys jump one of our guys and we end up in a short-handed situation,” Nolan said.

The Isles play a decent third period, creating chances to try and find the tying goal…and then Chris Simon gets all boneheaded on us…again. Simon takes an “attempt to injure” major penalty for using his skate to stomp on Jarkko Ruutu’s foot as both of them left the ice after a shift. Ruutu fell to the ice, but was not injured. The Isles spend 5 of the last 6 minutes of the game on the penalty kill - which surprisingly produces some of their best chances to score in the period, including a Mike Sillinger breakaway, but can’t find the equalizer.

Simon has been given a leave of absence by the team in advance of his 7th career NHL suspension. Having just completed a 25-game suspension in October, Simon is likely to have the rulebook thrown at him by NHL Dean of Discipline Colin Campbell, because of his repeat offender status. While this incident wasn’t as bad as the stick swinging incident from last year, I still think Simon is looking at 20-25 games again and probably some league mandated anger-management classes. Off the ice he sounds like a great guy, but on the ice he’s shown a history of not respecting his opponents, not thinking before he acts, and not acting in the best interest of his team. It is possible his Islanders and even NHL career could be over because of this incident.

If you play or played organized hockey, you probably know a guy like Chris Simon. He might have even been on your team. The guy who always loses his cool, takes the extra penalty, or takes the pointless, unprovoked penalty. The guy in front of the net who always has to get the last shove in. The guy who’s slashes like he’s chopping wood. Or the absolute worst guy in men’s league - the guy who forgets it’s all for fun and everyone has to go to work in the morning. The guy with no respect for his opponents and just wants to fight and hurt people. On the ice, in the parking lot, wherever.

Now I’m not saying Chris Simon is as bad as “that guy” or that he wants to fight Ruutu in the parking lot. I’m just saying if you’ve played organized hockey, you’ve seen a guy like this who loses his temper a bit too often. Simon’s been lucky that no one has been seriously hurt from his actions, he’s going to run out of luck…or second chances, very soon.

Isles Sink Sens in First Shootout of 2007

November 29th, 2007 by murph

The Ottawa Senators have beaten the Islanders in 8 straight games and are loaded with talent - Spezza, Alfredsson, Heatley…and Andrej Meszaros? Meszaros scored two fluky goals last night, one on an awful angle and one from the point that deflected off an Islander player to tie the game with less than two minutes to play. That led to a wild OT with 4-on-3 powerplays for both teams, and even a little 3-on-3 action too (kinky!). Ottawa had a fantastic chance after DP came out of the net to poke the puck away, and the Isles had a Park/Satan 2-on-1 broken up by an Ottawa defender. Sillinger had this to say about DP after the game.

“Oh man, I hate that,” Sillinger said. “He did give us a scare. I was thinking, ‘What the hell is he doing?”‘

Thank you Silly. You’ve just spoken for hundreds of Islanders fans everywhere.

Back to the game, DP and Emery kept the puck out of the net in OT and for the first time this season, the Isles were headed to a shootout. Alfredsson beat DP in the first round while Emery stopped Satan and Vasicek, which left the game on the shoulders of Captain Bill Guerin who came up with the big shootout goal to tie things up. Finally in round 6, Mike Sillinger scored and DP stopped Dean McAmmond for the Islanders 3-2 OT shootout win last night. Big win for the Orange and Blue who historically struggle vs speedy Ottawa.

The boys head to the city tonight to try and continue their dominance of the Rangers this season, looking for their 4th straight win vs the Blueshirts. Good thing there’s no such thing as a “Senators-hangover”…I hope. If you’re in the city, don’t forget about The Boss at the NHL Store today from 4-6pm before the game. I’ll be out watching the game and Thursday Night Football with the boys, so no live blog tonight unless Tommy can update.

Isles Bounce Back, Blank Bolts

November 2nd, 2007 by murph

Thatta boy Teddy…way to get the troops ready for last night’s game. Looking much more prepared than they did last Saturday, the Isles came out and played a full 60 minutes of solid hockey in a 4-0 shutout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. DiPietro played pretty solid and got some help from his friends in red…the goalposts…as the Lightning rang the post 2 or 3 times in the 3rd period. The shutout was DiPietro’s first of this season and 12th career shutout.

It was a big win for the team not only bouncing back from last Saturday’s Carolina debacle, but against the Lightning who have historically owned the Isles. It seems the Isles can never beat the Lightning or the Ottawa Senators. In fact the win was the Isles’ first in 9 tries against the Lightning, dating back to a 3-0 win in March 2004.

The man of the night, Mike Sillinger playing in his 1000th career NHL game, picked up an assist (and so did DiPietro) on Captain Bill Guerin’s goal in the first period. Josef Vasicek and ex-Lightning player Ruslan Fedotenko scored in the 2nd to give the Isles a 3-0 lead and Trent Hunter scored in the 3rd - his first goal since opening night to seal the deal at 4-0.

After the game, Sillinger spoke about the milestone.

“Guys are calling me the old guy,” Sillinger said. “Senior Guerin is the oldest.”

“It’s an honor to be in that 200-plus guys who have played 1,000 games,” Sillinger added. “It’s quite an accomplishment. Knock on wood, I’ve been healthy and played roughly 70 games a year, carrying into my 17th season. I’ve always stayed in shape.”

With the loss the Lightning get swept on their 3-game road trip to the NYC metro area, losing 3-1 to the Rangers, 6-1 to the Devils, and 4-0 to the Isles.

Finally, I posted a link to this on the new sidebar a couple of days ago, but it deserves it’s own mention. Lightning fan Steve Williamson is on the Ultimate NHL Road Trip, catching 30 games in 30 days, in 30 different arenas. Last night he visited the Coliseum which I’m sure was quite the difference from the Devils’ brand new Prudential Arena and the Rangers’ MSG. Check out his thought on the Coliseum and be sure to keep an eye on his blog as he continues his trip. Best of luck Steve, we’re all insanely jealous.

I trekked out to the Nassau Coliseum expecting a letdown after experiencing two glitzy arenas in Montreal and New Jersey. Traffic wasn’t too bad and I arrived about 6pm. Parking was only $7, which is way cheaper than any other arena so far, so that put me in a cheery mood. And I got a front row spot about 30 yards from the front door. From a distance, the Coliseum resembles a UFO that has landed splat in the middle of suburbia. I felt like I had stepped into a time warp for the night. When I get to Big D. tomorrow, I’ll explain what I mean, ’cause in a retro sort of way, I really enjoyed myself in the building.

Islanders.Com Ranks Season’s Top Games

May 11th, 2007 by Tom

sillinger_celbration1.jpg

Sillinger’s game winning goal ranks as #2

It always sucks when a ranking of your team’s 10 best games from a particular season fails to include even one postseason performance, but that’s what we have here in the NewYorkIslanders.com list. I can’t argue with their game selection. Wonder why they didn’t include the win over Buffalo in the playoffs. It was a big enough win to keep the dream alive for the Islanders for a couple of extra days and the team played great in earning the victory.

Here’s the Top 5 from the NewYorkIslanders.com ranking:

  1. Dec. 3    Islanders 7, Rangers 4
  2. Oct. 11   Islanders 5, Ducks 4 (Shoot Out)
  3. April 3    Islanders 3, Rangers 2 (Shoot Out)
  4. Feb. 16  Islanders 6, Penguins 5
  5. April 8    Islanders 3, Devils 2 (Shoot Out)

Islanders vs Penguins LIVE

February 19th, 2007 by murph

Hola! Buenos dias. It’s murph back from Costa Rica this afternoon, 8 days in sunny paradise while winter finally showed up in NY. Which is awesome, because I’m going snowboarding this weekend. This unemployment stuff kicks ass. I think Tom’s at the game, he emailed me while I was gone to see if I wanted to go. I just woke up and got coffee and sat down for period number two…what a doozy. Less than a minute in and the Penguins take a 3-1 lead on a wrap-around that trickled across the line followed by the Islanders storming back with 3 goals to take a 4-3 lead right now with about 5 minutes left. First Simon, then Blake on an awesome mid-air deflection and finally Kozlov. I’ll be here the rest of the game with updates.

[End Period 2: Islanders 4 Penguins 4] The Isles wrap up the period with back to back penalties for Pittsburgh’s second 5-on-3 PP of the afternoon and another Pens PP goal (full disclosure: I have Pittsburgh’s PP in my fantasy hockey league playoffs..yes!). What’s the NHL record for most 5-on-3 PK’s in the season? The Isles must be getting close.

Costa Rica was a blast. My first time out of the country, other than 2 trips to Canada. My first swim up wetbar, my first deep-sea fishing trip, my first 3 foot mahi mahi catch, AND the first time I was able to use Yahoo Sports NHL streaming. I caught a little bit of the second period of the Toronto game while we got showered and dresses for dinner that night. Pretty cool for the out of town fan.

[13:00 Period 3: Islanders 5 Penguins 5] Ryan Malone…Islander killer. One minute into the third, Malone picks up his second hat trick of the season versus the Islanders giving him 12 on the season with 6 of those vs the Islanders. Malone whacked at a Crosby rebound and then got a second chance with his own rebound right in front of the Islanders net for the 5-4 Pens lead. Chris Simon got it right back for the Islanders, picking up his second of game for the 5-5 tie. It’s been a highly entertaining game. Isles about to get a PP. Speaking of Islander killers, Crosby has 4 assists.

[FINAL: Islanders 6 Penguins 5] GOAL!! 40 seconds left, Crosby dances back and forth behind the net with the puck, he centers it and DP comes up with a big save. The Isles break out 2-on-2, Hilbert over to Sillinger…wrist shot, he SCORES!! With less than 30 seconds left and the Islanders win a wild afternoon game at the Coliseum. The win gives the Islanders 68 points on the season and they jump into a tie for the 8th and final Eastern Conference playoff spot with Toronto and Montreal. Nice job by the Orange and Blue, I really hope Tommy went to the game today it was fun.

Isles Down Flyers With 2 Third Period Goals

January 19th, 2007 by Tom

Well it’s about time. The Isles rebounded from a third period collapse in Pittsburgh to score two big goals against the Flyers in the final frame and skate out of Philly with a 4-2 win, just their third in the past 12 games. Mike Sillinger was big in the period, putting in a Satan rebound in the closing seconds of a 5-on-3 power play to give the OrangeAndBlue a 3-2 lead. Less than two minutes later, Sillinger’s nice outlet pass to Trent Hunter set up Andy Hilbert’s goal - the capper on the 4-2 win.

The victory put the Coliseum Heroes back over the .500 mark at 22-21-4.

“It was a big win for us,” Coach Ted told Newsday after the game. ”If someone had asked us at the beginning of the year if we’d be one game over .500 at the All-Star break, we’d take those chances. Now, we’re in good position at the break, and it will be a horse race to the end.”

The Islanders put up 36 shots against the Flyers’ 31 and had fewer penalty minutes, 10 to 14, a rarity of late.

It was the Flyers’ ninth straight loss at the rink formerly known as the FU Center and 16th loss in the past 19 games overall. Man that team has really crashed after being a perennial Cup contender. Amazing. No other team has been as hurt by the Lockout as the Flyers.

Hockey Afternoon in Uniondale

January 15th, 2007 by murph

Good Morning! Are you ready for some hockey? Maybe not, but let’s hope the boys in blue and orange are.

[00:00 1st Period] Just so you know, Slapshot is on Cinemax right now. I’m torn. At least I know what I’m doing between periods now.

[01:15] First good scoring chance goes to the Lightning as Marty St. Louis streaks in on DP alone. Damn he’s fast. DP comes up with the big save.

[02:13]
Isles get the first PP of the game as Kubina goes to the box for holding on Asham.

[03:38] GOAL!! It’s a powerplay goal for Yashin as he comes out of the corner, shoots, and then bangs in his own rebound for the 1-0 lead.

[04:00] Fox Sports NY (FSNY) runs the stat, the Isles are 17-3-1 when scoring first.

[05:25] Islander All-Star Jason Blake bumps into Lightning goalie Johan Holmqvist. Holmqvist makes it looks like he’s been shot. Refs give Holmqvist an Oscar and Blake a 2 minute penalty for goaltender interference. Give me a break.

[06:20] Sean Hill just creamed St. Louis in the corner. Sweet.

[06:55] Isles can’t clear on the PK and it leads to a Lightning goal. Vaclav Prospal powers to the net, DP makes the save and Eric Perrin bangs in the rebound.

[08:24] Replay shows Prospal scored the Islanders goal as Perrin actually whiffed. Witt picks up a penalty for a holding. Another ticky-tacky call.

[09:21] Brad Richards blast a one-timer in and out of the net. Video review, but this one’s gonna count. 2-1 Lightning on 3 powerplay goals so far.

[14:26] Corey Sarich picks up a penalty to give the Isles their 2nd powerplay of the afternoon. FSNY shows replays of the first Isles/Lightning game this season. Three backdoor goals by the Lightning vs the Islanders. Very similar to the two goals scored by them today. The Isles D needs some rear-view mirrors mounted to their helmets vs. this team.

[15:36] The Isles ice the puck…on the powerplay.

[15:53] Are you $@^@ kidding me? They just did it again.

[16:26] Powerplay over. I think they had as many shots as they did icings on that powerplay.

[16:55] A 2 on 2 offensive rush by the Lightning leads to 3 DP saves.

[16:55] FSNY comes back from the break with a shot of the Islanders’ Most Famous Fan - Christie Brinkley. Mmmm.

[20:00 1st Period] And that’s the end of the first. Isles waste a good start giving up 2 PP goals. Shots in favor of the Isles 9-8.

[00:00 2nd Period]The fans are standing up to them. The security guards are standing up to them. The peanut vendors are standing up to them. And by golly, if I could be down there, I’d be standing up to them.” My favorite movie ever, with Caddyshack a close second. If it’s on TV I have to watch it.

[00:37] Hilbert holds onto St. Louis in the corner a little too long and gets called for holding. Another Lightning PP.

[00:58] Surprise! Backdoor pass for Fedotenko who’s all alone, but DP breaks up the pass. Whew.

[01:07] Which leads to a nice shorthanded attempt by Kozlov. Save Holmqvist. FSNY tells us the Lightning are 6 for 10 on the PP vs. the Islanders this season. Oy!

[02:37] Isles kill off the rest of the penalty.

[06:30] Hunter/Sillinger/Hilbert line generates some pressure and a couple of shots.

[08:20] Blake from behind the net to a streaking Poti for a one-timer, but it is deflected or stopped wide.

[08:45] Poti gets called for hooking and TB’s 4th PP of the afternoon.

[09:55] A hard clear by Gervais wraps all the way around to Kozlov who streaks into the offensive zone and fires a hard shot. That’s two decent shots by Koz while shorthanded today.

[10:11] DP comes out of the net to his right to try and stop the puck from wrapping around. He trips/falls and touches the puck across the red-line in the “no-goalies allowed” zone. Tampa’s going to end up with 34 seconds of 5 on 3 PP time.

[10:45] The 5 on 3 is over, Tampa had 2 great shots but missed the net both times. Isles get a little lucky there.

[12:11] Isles kill DP’s penalty off too. We’re just a little past halfway through the game and the Isles have given up 5 powerplays. Not good.

[12:45] Crowd wakes up a little, tries to get into it. Looks pretty crowded, I bet the “announced” attendance will be a sellout or close.

[13:41] DP tries to catch the Lightning on player change with a long pass up ice to Blake. Blake’s got 1 man to beat on his way to the net. He tries to shoulder his way in there, but doesn’t get much of a shot off. He does go crashing into Holmqvist again. No call this time.

[15:37] Lecavalier goes around Poti and to the net. Save DP. Lecavalier takes out DP (with not much contact from the Islander D), and St. Louis bangs in the rebound for a 3-1 Lightning lead. Yuck.

[17:45] Blake drop pass for Yashin who blasts it…high and wide.

[20:00 2nd Period] St. Louis picks up a penalty for roughing with 47 seconds left in the period. With the Isles on the PP and just a few seconds left in the period, Hill takes a big shot from the point, save. Blake’s in front looking for the rebound, he gets crossed checked on top of the Lightning goalie. Sillinger comes flying into the crease hitting a Lightning player and looking for a rebound. Nolan Pratt proceeds to dump Silly into the net. Satan tries to come to Silly’s aid and gets tied up with another Lightning player. Pushing, shoving, penalties are called. 2 on the Lightning 1 on Satan for the Islanders. Nice.

[00:00 3rd Period] Isles will start the 3rd period with a 5 on 3 powerplay for 1:13. GOTTA get one back here, cut lead to 1, get the crowd into it. Yashin’s going to start the period on the left point.

[01:10] Isles work it around, 2 shots from Yashin, top of the circles, wide or deflected. Blakey and Poti keep the Isles in possession of the puck. They work it into the slot for Sillinger, save. Back again to Sillinger who feeds Kozlov behind him on the left. Holmqvist slides over to face Kozlov. Koz waits, waits, waits and the roofs it over his glove for the POWERPLAY GOAL! 3-2 Tampa and the Isles will still be on the powerplay.

[02:00] Hill a shot with Blake right in front, save. Hill another shot from the left side, save. Islanders powerplay is over.

[04:20] FSNY tells us the Isles have taken the last 12 shots in the game, including all 8 in the 3rd period.

[04:50] Kozlov giveaway to Lecavalier at the Isles blue line. Witt ties him up and just manhandles him off the puck taking away what could have been a good scoring chance.

[07:25] Crap. Witt sends the puck around the boards, it hits a piece of a broken stick and Hill can’t handle it. St. Louis scoops it up and finds Lecavalier on DP’s backdoor. DP makes an awesome save on the first shot and stops the rebound, but Lecavalier banks his third chance into the back of the net. 4-2 Lightning.

[10:45] GOAL! Hunter brings the Islanders back within 1, banging in a rebound of a Sillinger shot. Great shift by this line - working the puck and getting shots, glad to see they ended it with a goal.

[11:00] Isles almost give it right back. DP with a big save on Fedotenko.

[14:55] 5:05 left in the game. 5:04.03 until the Isles tie this one up. Christie Brinkley is doing the YMCA. Hot.

[18:50] DP heads for the bench for the extra attacker.

[19:50] Satan starts the rush off with a wrister, the rebound drops at Holmqvist’s feet, in the crease. No one around to bang at the inviting rebound. Isles work it, get some shots. Sillinger shot, save, Holmqvist holds on. Isles call timeout with 9.3 seconds remaining.

[20:00 3rd Period] The puck shoots back towards the blue line off the faceoff and no one can keep it in. That’ll do it. The Isles lose 4-3 despite outshooting the Lightning 36-24. No time to cry about it, the Islanders play in Pittsburgh tomorrow night.

Victory At Last, Isles Beat Rangers Again

January 9th, 2007 by Tom

I logged on with 7 minutes to go. Here’s how it ended:

With 7 to go, the Isles lead the Rangers 5-3 at MSG. Isles trying to end that pathetic six game slide and stay above the .500 mark.

Mike Sillinger has put two in for the OrangeAndBlue. Witt, Satan, and Kozlov have also scored.

With 5:30, Richard Park got nailed with a penalty. Busted Jagr’s lip with his stick. Ranger power play.

Shanahan hit a blast off the crossbar. Witt clears. Rangers last rush. DiPietro save on Cullen. Power play over. Rangers still in Isles’ end.

Park ices the puck. 2:58 to go.

Nice footage of the Ranger fans leaving early.

Tripping penalty on Hill with 2:14 to go. He took out Straka. Really no need for that.

Lundqvist goes to the bench. Rangers have two-man advantage.

1:26 to go.

DP with a big save off of Shanahan. Isles clear. 36 seconds to go.

GAME OVER. ISLES WIN. FINALLY.

And there’s a fight. Aaron Ward takes on Witt. There’s a crowd. It’s immediately defused. Rangers can’t take it. Isles continue domination of the season series - 4-0.
