Looks like I wasn’t the only one watching the Leafs/Habs on Saturday night. Hockey Night in Canada set a new audience record.
With a playoff spot potentially on the line, the Hockey Night telecast of the Montreal Canadiens-Toronto Maple Leafs game on Saturday drew 2.81 million viewers. That’s a regular-season record, surpassing the 2.75 million who tuned in for the Hockey Night outdoor game between the Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 22, 2003. It’s also 103-per-cent more than the 2006-07 regular-season average of 1.381 million before Saturday. “I have to buy [Hockey Night executive producer] Joel Darling dinner,” said Scott Moore, the head of CBC Sports.
“He predicted a record audience, but I figured it would be something less.”
So I was really annoyed this morning as I checked the TV listings and saw there are NO games on Versus tonight. Way to go there guys. That’s OK I thought, I’m sure either Yahoo Sports or Comcast Live would be streaming the game online tonight. Wrong again.
However, thanks to a little loophole on most cable systems the Toronto/Montreal may be available to you. On many cable systems, the MLB package and the NHL package overlap. And since the MLB package is free this week, so is NHL Center Ice. I just found the TOR/MTL game on channel 437 NHL7 on NYC Time Warner. If you really want to see the game, check your local listings.
As I turned the game on period 2 just started. The Leafs scored to take a 3-1 lead but have just surrendered back to back goals and allowed Montreal to tie the game. The crowd in Toronto sounds like they are ready to riot in the streets with every shot, save and goal. It’s awesome.
[UPDATE] Holy #%@! Michael Ryder has a natural hat trick for Montreal who now leads 4-3 with 12+ left in the 2nd. The Leafs just pulled Raycroft.
[UPDATE 2] Crazy, crazy game in Toronto. Highly entertaining hockey. The Leafs have stormed back with 2 in the 3rd to take a 6-5 lead, 13 minutes left in the game.
[UPDATE 3] It’s over in Toronto, Maple Leafs win. The Islanders’ season all comes down to tomorrow’s game vs New Jersey, win and IN. Go OrangeAndBlue!!
Coach Ted Nolan spoke with Howie Rose about the deadline deals before tonight’s game against the Flyers. Here’s what he had to say:
What do you think about adding Smyth?
If you’re looking for one of the protocol captain-type guys and leader type of player to come in and really add to your core players you couldn’t ask for a better guy. Ryan is referred to in Canada as Mr. Canada so he’s a true leader and we’re really looking forward to getting him. And you look forward to a guy like Yashin coming back and that’s going to be a great combination.
We wanted to give Yashin a real top-end type of guy to play with. Not any disrespect to Chris Simon, Chris did some really great things for him, but to have a guy like Ryan Smyth on our team that’s a big addition.
When do you expect Yashin to return?
I think (the trade) will probably help is recovery. He’ll probably return tomorrow. But we’re going to keep on course and not rush him back too quickly. I know he’ll probably be excited to come back.
What will Smyth add to this team?
I think he’s going to add what’s been lacking on this team for some time. If you look at the banners in the stands and look at Bossy and Trottier’s and Potvin’s and Tonelli’s, we need true leaders to not only lead this team but to show the next generation of kids what it takes to really be an Islander and to wear the shirt proudly and compete on a regular basis. It’s not a right to play in the National Hockey League it’s a priviledge.
There was much more, including Nolan’s thoughts on Zednik (will play on second line with Kozlov and Satan), Long Island (one of the “best kept secrets in the NHL”), and Marc-Andre Bergeron (already a “great addition”).
Coach Nolan gets profiled and interviewed by Bryant Gumbel tonight at 10pm on HBO’s Real Sports.
In 1995, the struggling Buffalo Sabres hockey franchise recruited minor league coach Ted Nolan to turn things around. His toughness as a former player and resourcefulness as a coach helped him lead a young team of overachievers to the top of their division after only two years at the helm. But shortly after that successful 1997 season, Nolan’s contract was not renewed. After his departure from the league, the former NHL Coach of the Year found a more meaningful way to spend his time. As a Canadian Indian, Nolan recognized a lack of opportunity for fellow Canadian Indians growing up amidst poverty, racism and alcoholism, and he took to contributing his time and efforts helping young indigenous men achieve their dream of playing hockey. Correspondent Frank Deford catches up with Nolan, who has recently become the head coach of the New York Islanders after eight years away from the NHL.
- Province Sports is holding a vote to determine NHL’s All-Time Heavyweight Champ. They’ve had a panel of experts select 32 great fighters from various NHL eras. Be sure to vote early and often for Clark “The Sleeping Giant” Gillies who takes on Jack “Killer” Carlson and Chris Simon who faces Donald Brashear in round 1 of the tournament.
- Great column from John Buccigross over at ESPN. He talks about NHL broadcasts, bigger nets, new schedules, and answers questions from fans. He also mentions this New York Time article and some seriously disturbing TV ratings for the local teams.
“At this point, the NHL has to continue to put on a better show. In a New York Times article from Feb. 2, Richard Sandomir reported that 736 people watched the Jan. 27 Devils-Panthers game on MSG … 736. Here are other numbers from Sandomir’s column:
• The Devils average 13,206 households for their televised games.
• The Islanders average just 7,336.
• The Rangers average 36,834.
• Of all Fox Sports Net regional channels, the Red Wings lead all NHL teams (average 96,915).
• This season’s All-Star Game drew 691,000 viewers.
• 2.7 million watched in 2004.
• 6.5 million watched in 1996.
I have numbers from some of our own network’s recent ratings. On Jan. 28, 925,377 people watched the Winter X Games between 9:13-11:21 p.m. On ESPN2, 824,360 people watched a replay of the Australian Open men’s final.”
Video time…first up is the Islanders/Rangers brawl from 2004.

Doooobie! Wade Dubielewicz was the Bridgeport Soundtigers’ lone AHL All-Star representative. Here’s a video from the AHL Skills Competition breakaway relay. Doobie makes the first save, then gets absolutely abused as Matt Lashoff of the Providence Bruins goes between his legs for the highlight reel goal.

Finally a pair of videos via Off Wing Opinion. First up it’s how a hockey puck is made, second up is the Moan/Weber fight with a MONSTER knockout right hand from Moan. His jersey was over his head when he threw the punch no less.

- With the Mets loss last night, it means that Howie Rose is free and should be returning to the Islanders broadcast booth this weekend. We here at IslandersArmy.com bid a fond farewell (again) to Islanders’ broadcasting legend Jiggs McDonald who’s return for the first seven games of the season was a welcome surprise and huge success.
- Also leaving is Evan Grossman, Islanders beat writer for the NY Post whose reporting was frequently quoted and linked to here at IslandersArmy.com. Evan has accepted a position writing for NHL.com. Congrats Evan. No word yet on whether the NY Post will be replacing Grossman, or just ignoring the Islanders even more now.
- Finally we want to say hello to a new NHL stats website, Hockey-Recap.com. The site provides a daily recap of the previous nights’ stats as well as season leaders in a very simple and clean layout. You can also sign up to receive the daily report via email if you prefer. Faceoffs, blocked shots, time on ice…I’m so impressed by the amount of stats this site has available.
Hill #1 in hits, Yashin #1 in shots last night. I shared this site with my fantasy hockey league owners…but I really didn’t want to!
